5 Signs Your Small Business Website Needs a Redesign

Mike Bias Jun 10, 2026

Your website is often the first impression a potential customer has of your business. Before they call, before they visit, before they buy — they Google you. What they find either builds trust or kills it. Here are five signs your current site is doing more harm than good.

1. It Loads Slowly

Pull up your website on your phone. Start a stopwatch. How long before it's usable?

If it takes more than three seconds, you're losing people. Google's own data shows that as page load time goes from one second to five seconds, the probability of a visitor bouncing (leaving immediately) increases by 90%.

You can test your site's speed right now at PageSpeed Insights. A score below 70 on mobile is a red flag. Below 50 means customers are actively leaving because of it.

2. It Doesn't Work on Mobile

Try navigating your site on a smartphone. Do buttons fit under your thumb? Does the text require zooming? Do images overflow off the screen?

If your site was built more than four or five years ago, there's a good chance it was designed for desktops first — and mobile was an afterthought. In 2026, that's backwards. Over 60% of local business searches happen on a phone, and Google ranks mobile-friendly sites higher.

3. You're Embarrassed to Share It

This one is simple but honest. When someone asks for your website, do you hesitate? Do you add "it's a little outdated" before you give out the link?

That hesitation is worth paying attention to. Your website is a direct reflection of your business. If you wouldn't hand someone a brochure that looked like it was from 2015, you shouldn't be sending them to a website that looks that way either.

4. You Can't Update It Yourself

A well-built website shouldn't require a developer every time you need to change your hours, add a service, or update a photo. If your site is on an old platform — or was custom-built years ago with no documentation — basic changes become expensive and frustrating.

Modern websites should be easy to hand off or update. If yours feels like a locked box, that's a design problem.

5. Your Phone Isn't Ringing

This is the bottom line. A website exists for one reason: to get customers to contact you.

If you're getting website traffic but not calls, form submissions, or inquiries, something is broken. Maybe the phone number is hard to find. Maybe the contact form doesn't work. Maybe the site doesn't clearly explain what you do and who you serve.

A website that gets traffic but generates no leads is just digital wallpaper.
